Description
A traditional game of chance, Lotería—the Spanish word for lottery—is often referred to as Mexican bingo, where illustrated cards depicting the Mexican aesthetic replace bingo balls. A traditional Lotería deck has 54 cards with images such as la sirena (the mermaid), el catrin (the butler), el barril (the barrel), la estrella (the star), el nopal (the cactus). The purpose of the game is to fill a board (also known as “cartón”) chosen by the player, or to complete a certain pattern (such as four images in a row, diagonally, or in the corners). The first person to complete the board yells, “Lottery!” ending the round.
