Description

The accidental discovery of the Archaic ossuary at a construction site on the grounds of Lewis Central School, provided a turning point in Indian-archaeologist relations which ultimately led to the enactment of new sections in the Iowa legal code.

This Late Archaic ossuary, approximately 2800 years old, was discovered near Council Bluffs in 1975 during earth moving operations that partially destroyed it. The fragile skeletal remains of 25 individuals ranging from childhood to old age were recovered from the undisturbed portion.

Troy Stolp will trace the history of events leading up to the discovery of the Lewis Central School dig site (13PW005).
