Description

This historical account will look closely at the life of French explorer Etienne Veniard de Bourgmont. Presented by local historian Troy Stolp.

Etienne was born in 1679 in Central Normandy, France. He was a poacher, a soldier, and an illegal trader. In 1714, he accompanied Missouri Indians back to their homeland, making him the first European known to have explored the Missouri valley, and the first man to map the Missouri River.
