A singer-songwriter, Debra Marquart fuses poetry, music, and storytelling in her performances. Topics range widely and include the following: agriculture and rural life; music performance and popular music history; immigration and travel; and environmental issues.

In 2019, Debra Marquart, Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University, was named Iowa’s fourth Poet Laureate.

The Iowa Poet Laureate is a two-year renewable appointment sponsored by Humanities Iowa that is intended to recognize the importance of poetry in Iowans’ everyday lives.
