Volunteer at the Library

The Library has volunteers that help with a whole host of activities, including:

  • Shelving books and audio-visual materials
  • Setting up and tearing down before and after programs
  • Facilitating Library-Sponsored Book Clubs
  • Digitizing material from our Special Collections
  • Assisting at special library events

Volunteer Tasks and Descriptions

Overview: 
Volunteers in this position will be responsible for cleaning and/or tidying around the inside or outside of the library. The duties performed by this position help maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the collection, building or grounds, which in turn enhances the patron experience. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Straightening books and materials on the shelves
  • Dusting shelves
  • Cleaning surfaces
  • Picking up litter
  • Collecting used library materials through the library and returning them to the Circulation Desk 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction
  • Ability to meet physical demands of duties including standing or walking for long periods of time, bending, and/or stooping
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision 

Time Commitment: 
1-2 hours a week Minimum 2 month commitment 

Staff Contact: 
Circulation Manager or Circulation Assistant

Overview: 
Responsible for picking up and delivering library materials once a month to individuals signed up for Homebound Services. Delivery occurs on Wednesdays between 9 am – 5 pm. Includes delivering materials on assigned route, returning materials to library staff, and noting any issues with delivery or additional library patron needs. The volunteer must occasionally lift and/or move objects an average of 20 pounds, move wheeled carts containing objects totaling up to an average of 60 to 80 pounds, and must be able to provide personal transportation to delivery locations. 


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Deliver and pick up materials on assigned route every 4 weeks within a 9am-5pm delivery window
  • Return materials to library staff
  • Note any issues with delivery site and/or patron’s library needs 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction
  • Ability to meet physical demands of duties
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must have access to a personal vehicle to complete deliveries
  • Ability to work in a pleasant and effective manner with patrons and library staff
  • Ability to maintain patron confidentiality 

Time Commitment: 
1-3 hours a month on Wednesday delivery dates Minimum 1 year commitment

Homebound Coordinator

Overview: 

Volunteers assisting with adult focused programs provide support in a variety of ways. Support needs may look different depending on the program, but could include helping staff with setup or cleanup, preparing materials, assisting attendees with directions, etc. Program assistance for adults is focused on programs that have an adult target audience only. Programs typically take place at the library, but may also be held at offsite locations. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Setup before the program and cleanup after the program ends
  • Prepare materials for art or crafting programs
  • Provide expertise on a specific topic relevant to a library program need
  • Guide attendees through the execution of a program
  • Refers concerns or issues to the responsible staff member 

Qualifications: 

  • Ability to work in a pleasant and effective manner patrons and library staff
  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction  
  • Ability to maintain patron confidentiality
  • Ability to use independent judgment to make decisions
  • Ability to be creative, flexible and to prioritize tasks 

Time Commitment: 

2-4 hours a month, or as needed for special events Minimum 6 month commitment 

Staff Contact: 

Adult Programming Librarian

Overview: 

Volunteers assisting with digitization projects will work with a staff member to scan in photographs, yearbooks, or other relevant historical records. Regular volunteering shifts with a longer commitment period is required for this position in order to ensure that entire collections are scanned and digitized in a timely manner. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Use a scanner to precisely scan materials into a digitized format
  • Maintain organization of historical records
  • Refers progress, concerns or issues to the responsible staff member 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction
  • Basic computer and digital literacy skills, with the ability to learn how to use specific software or equipment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision 

Time Commitment: 

2-3 hours a week Minimum 1 year commitment 

Staff Contact: 

Special Collections Librarian, Reference Manager, or Support Services Manager

Overview: 

Shelves materials, a. The volunteer must occasionally lift and/or move objects an average of 20 pounds, move wheeled carts containing objects totaling up to an average of 60 to 80 pounds. While performing this task, the volunteer is frequently required to walk, bend, and stand. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Shelves materials back on the shelf in the correct location and proper order
  • Straightening books and materials on the shelves as needed
  • Shelf-reading includes verifying that items are in order on the shelf by the call number on the item
  • Collecting used library materials through the library and returning them to the Circulation Desk
  • Notes any issues relating to shelving and reports that to a staff member 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction
  • Ability to file according to alphabetical and numerical systems
  • Ability to meet physical demands of duties
  • Ability to use independent judgment to make decisions 

Time Commitment: 

1-2 hours a week Minimum 3 month commitment

What happens next?

Volunteer selection is based on the qualifications and interests of the applicants and the needs of the library at any given time. If you are selected as a volunteer, you will be sent invitations detailing volunteer opportunities. At your first shift, you will be asked to watch the Volunteer Orientation Video and then you’ll be able to get started.

Volunteer for the Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Council Bluffs Public Library operate the Friends of the Library Bookstore, as well as sponsor an annual book sale.  The Friends rely on volunteers to staff the Bookstore and prepare and help with the book sale.
