Volunteer as a Teen

Volunteer at the Library

The library accepts Teen Volunteers beginning with the summer after 5th grade, ending with the summer after 12th grade, and everything in between! As a Teen Volunteer, you can earn service hours to fulfill school and organizational requirements, have fines forgiven from your library account, and gives you the chance to give back to your community.

Applications are accepted continuously. If you would like to become a Teen Volunteer at the Council Bluffs Public Library, follow these steps:

Volunteer Tasks and Descriptions

Overview:

Volunteers in this position will be responsible for cleaning and/or tidying around the inside or outside of the library. The duties performed by this position help maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the collection and Teen Central, which in turn enhances the patron experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Straightening books and materials on the shelves
  • Dusting shelves
  • Cleaning surfaces
  • Picking up litter

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction
  • Ability to meet physical demands of duties including standing or walking for long periods of time, bending, and/or stooping
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

Time Commitment:

1-1.5hrs per shift

Teen Services Manager or Teen Services Assistant

Overview:

Volunteers assisting with youth programs provide support in a variety of ways. Support needs may look different depending on the program, but could include helping staff with setup or cleanup, preparing materials, assisting attendees with directions, etc. Program assistance for youth is focused on programs that have a youth and family target audience. Programs typically take place at the library, but may also be held at offsite locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Setup before the program and cleanup after the program ends
  • Prepare materials for art or crafting programs
  • Guide attendees through the execution of a program
  • Keep track of event attendance
  • Take photos of events
  • Refer concerns or issues to the responsible staff member

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in a pleasant and effective manner
  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction
  • Ability to maintain patron confidentiality
  • If needed offsite, must have transportation to parks
  • Ability to meet physical demands of duties
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

Time Commitment:

2-2.5hrs per shift

Overview:

Programs typically take place at the library, but may also be held at offsite locations.

Teen Services Manager or Teen Services Assistant

Overview:

Volunteers in this position will be responsible for keeping our collection tidy and shelving returns. Volunteers may be asked to shelf-read to make sure materials are in order, and to shelve materials waiting to be returned to the shelves. The duties performed by this position help maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the collection, and ensure materials are accessible for patrons.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shelve materials in the correct location and proper order
  • Straighten books and materials on the shelves as needed
  • Shelf-reading includes verifying that items are in order on the shelf by the call number on the item
  • Note any issues relating to shelving and report to a staff member
  • Shelf-reading YA fiction, Manga, Graphic Novels and Comics, CDs
  • Shelving returns for YA fiction, Non-fiction, Graphic Novels, and Manga

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction
  • Ability to meet physical demands of duties
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to file according to alphabetical and numerical systems
  • Must have completed the Shelving Orientation Video and Assessment

Teen Services Manager or Teen Services Assistant

Overview:

Current Teen Volunteers have the opportunity to give back to their library by becoming a Teen Library Ambassador. These ambassadors will increase awareness of library services and resources, serve as a voice for the library, help their peers learn about the library, and become a part of the library community.

The Teen Library Ambassador program will build on our current volunteer program by offering a new way for teens to work with the library, promote library services to their peers, create digital content and get service hours.

This group of teens will work independently to create digital content the library could use on social media to promote resources and services to teens.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work independently on digital content
  • Take photos of programs and events
  • Create posts, videos, and digital art for social media
  • Promote library programs and services on social media
  • Represent the library as an ambassador

Qualifications:

  • Current CBPL teen volunteers
  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction
  • Ability to meet physical demands of duties
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Showing an interest in social media

Time Commitment:

2-3hrs per shift

What happens next?

Volunteer selection is based on the qualifications and interests of the applicants and the needs of the library at any given time. If you are selected as a volunteer, you will be added to our email list and sent weekly invitations detailing volunteer opportunities. At your first shift, you will be asked to watch the Teen Volunteer Orientation Video and then you’ll be able to get started.

Teen Scholarship

The Friends of the Council Bluffs Public Library also awards an annual scholarship of $500-$1,000 to one or two senior volunteers.
To qualify, volunteers must have contributed a minimum of 30 hours of volunteer work throughout his or her junior and senior years of high school.
